Hard Fork

Definition

A hard fork is a permanent divergence in a blockchain's protocol that creates a new cryptocurrency, often resulting in existing holders receiving new tokens. Under IRS Revenue Ruling 2019-24, tokens received from a hard fork are treated as ordinary income at their fair market value on the date they are received. CPAs must track the receipt date and fair market value to properly report this income on a client's tax return.
