Staking Rewards

Definition

Staking rewards are cryptocurrency tokens earned by participants who lock up their holdings to help validate transactions on a proof-of-stake blockchain network. The IRS treats staking rewards as ordinary income at fair market value on the date the taxpayer receives dominion and control over the tokens. CPAs must report these rewards as income and establish a cost basis equal to that fair market value for any future disposal.
