Standard Deduction
Definition
A fixed dollar amount that reduces the income you're taxed on. For tax year 2025: $15,750 single or married filing separately; $31,500 married filing jointly or qualifying surviving spouse; $23,625 head of household. Additional standard deduction amounts apply for taxpayers who are 65 or older or blind. Most taxpayers take the standard deduction rather than itemizing.
