Required Minimum Distribution (RMD)

Definition

The minimum amount you must withdraw annually from traditional IRAs, 401(k)s, and other tax-deferred retirement accounts starting at age 73 (under SECURE 2.0 Act). Failure to take RMDs results in a 25% penalty on the amount not withdrawn.
