Nexus is the sufficient connection between a business and a state that obligates the business to comply with that state's tax laws, including filing returns and paying taxes. It can be established through physical presence, such as an office or employees, or through economic activity like exceeding a sales threshold in the state. Determining nexus is a critical first step in multi-state tax compliance.
