Marketplace Facilitator

Definition

A business or platform that contracts with third-party sellers to facilitate the sale of goods or services and is responsible for collecting and remitting sales tax on those transactions under marketplace facilitator laws adopted by most states. These laws shift the sales tax compliance burden from individual sellers to the platform itself, such as Amazon or Etsy. CPAs conducting nexus studies must account for marketplace facilitator rules when assessing a client's actual sales tax exposure.
