Lockstep Compensation

Definition

Lockstep compensation is a partner pay model in which all equity partners advance through standardized compensation tiers based primarily on seniority or years as a partner rather than individual production. It is common in law firms and some larger CPA firms because it encourages collaboration over individual rainmaking. The model reduces internal competition but can frustrate high performers who generate significantly more revenue than their peers.
