Failure-to-Pay Penalty

Definition

An IRS penalty charged when a taxpayer does not pay their tax liability by the due date, generally accruing at 0.5% of the unpaid balance per month up to a maximum of 25%. The penalty continues to accumulate even if an extension to file was granted, since an extension only delays the filing deadline, not the payment deadline.
