What this letter means

The NIA is an audit notice issued when Massachusetts DOR believes you owe additional taxes; it identifies the reason DOR believes your tax should be increased. It is not a tax bill: it shows the amount you will owe if you do not dispute it.

State notices follow their own windows and their own appeal form.

What to do

  1. 1If you agree with the amount shown, pay in full immediately to avoid additional interest and penalties, or make a partial payment if you cannot pay in full.
  2. 2If you disagree, respond online at MassTaxConnect: under Quick Links choose 'Submit documentation', enter the Letter ID from the upper right-hand corner of your notice, and attach your documents with a copy of the notice.
  3. 3For questions, send DOR a secure e-message through MassTaxConnect or call the Contact Center at 617-887-6367 during normal business hours.
  4. 4Do not use the online documentation option to file a tax return; you cannot set up a payment agreement until you receive the Notice of Assessment.

The Massachusetts DOR page describes two paths, one if you agree with the change and one if you do not. The response form that came with your letter is where you mark which one applies.

If you do nothing

If you do not dispute it, the amount shown becomes what you owe and a Notice of Assessment (a bill) is issued in approximately 30 days.
